AL-PACK Enterprises Ltd. Awarded Research Funding
Press Release: AL PACK Enterprises Ltd

Vernon Allen and Louis LeBlanc, owners of AL-PACK Enterprises Ltd, are pleased to announce that they have been selected as one of six companies in New Brunswick to receive financing from the 2008 Atlantic Innovation Fund. AL-PACK will partner with the University of New Brunswick's researcher Dr. Huining Xiao, a professor of chemical engineering, to develop and commercialize a variety of starch-based biodegradable packaging films and antimicrobial materials. The resulting technology will have several applications but will focus mainly on food packaging.

The project will explore the feasibility of manufacturing biodegradable packaging using tailor modified (potato) starches as one of the major components. This project, with the total estimated cost of approximately $2.2 million, will receive up to $1.5 million for the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a three year period.

Waste generation continues to grow in Canada at a rate of 1.5% annually and is becoming an environmental concern. The market is demanding that companies use packaging that is more environmentally friendly. Vernon Allen stated, "This is exciting news for AL-PACK's future. However, this is only the first step in a long process. Now that the financing is in place, we can finalize a research plan that is acceptable to AL-PACK, UNB and Atlantic Innovation Fund. AL-PACK will then approach our current suppliers for their involvement and support to ensure the project is a success."

Launched in 2001, the Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF) is helping Atlantic Canadians compete in a global knowledge-based economy through the development of new ideas, products, businesses and markets. AIF funding is provided to selected eligible projects through a series of competitive funding rounds. Under the first five rounds, a total of 191 projects have been approved, committing $512.5 million in AIF funding towards projects valued at over $1 billion. The fund is set up as a loan and funds are only distributed to participants once the investment in research projects has occurred and becomes repayable upon successful implementation of future commercial applications.

AL-PACK Enterprises Ltd., located in Moncton, New Brunswick, is one of the largest privately owned and operated packaging distributors in Atlantic Canada. AL-PACK was incorporated in 1995 by business partners Louis LeBlanc and Vernon Allen. The company initially started as a distributor of packaging supplies and services. AL-PACK has expanded over its 13 year history to manufacture specialized packaging (wooden crates, foam and corrugate products) and polyethylene bags. The company employs 55 people with revenues in excess of $15 million.
